Database Definition:

When we talk of the database, it implies a collection of data that may include reviews, tables, queries, schemas, and other elements. A database may also be referred to as DB and it allows people wanting to access particular information be able to do so easily and in an organized way. Having a database makes it easy for a program or computer program to be able to pick the data needed and work on it or execute it.

In database design, there is a concept referred to as Hypertext, and these are a form of database that may be linked to other objects. Hypertext databases are primarily useful when a user wants to execute, arrange, or put in order some huge amount of unorganized or contrasting information.  Such information is usually not meant for use in numerical analysis.

What is DBMS?

When referring to the database management system, it is a software application that helps the user to interact with other computer applications. A DBMS also allows interaction to occur within the database thereby allowing not only capturing of data a person wants but also analyzing it.

Database management systems are designed to help with definition and creation as well as updating and querying of databases. A DBMS is also designed to help in the administration of databases. There are many types of database management systems ranging from the ones we use on computers which are usually small systems to the robust ones which run on mainframes. Generally, a DBMS is a software application principally designed to ensure definition, creation, querying, and updating of databases in addition to administration. A DBMS also includes Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, SAP HANA, MySQL, Sybase, Oracle, and IBM DB2.

Database vs. DBMS

Examining the two (database and DBMS) you will find that there are coherent differences. First, a database isn’t portable across various data management systems (DBMSs) and that different DBMSs may be interoperated through the help of an ANSI standard like SQL or ODBC and JDBC. Doing so would enable the application to work or interoperate with numerous DBMSs.

DBMS referring to database management system is a concept comprising a set of rules that most database systems follow. You may have a particular database system following a majority of the tools but others only take some rules. Many of the database products or tools tend to use the SQL language. This SQL language is an ANSI standard. Database systems like Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, and MySQL use or have used this standard as a base after which they extend or enhance its features.

When we look at a database, it comprises an organized group of data or says information which organizations, individuals, developers, or other people can easily access, update, and manipulate. A database management system, on the other hand, is a software program aimed at managing a database on computers – for example, Oracle and MySQL or Microsoft Acess.

DBMS Classification:

Database management systems are classed according to the database model they support. For example:

  • A relational database is a tabular database whereby data is defined allowing it to be reorganized and accessed through various ways. The database stores data within tables and these tables have a relationship with other tables.
  • A distributed database comprises a database that may be replicated or dispersed among various points within a network.
  • There is the object-oriented programming database in which case the data is defined within object classes as well as subclasses. An example of object-oriented DBMS is the popular MySQL. This database stores records, fields, and cells containing data. So the tools that are used in manipulating the data contained in a database are called the DBMSs. A practical example is of a DBMS can be the SQL Server.

In essence, a database management system (DBMS) is the engine or actual program containing the logic used to execute SQL statements or perform data accessed based upon the commands provided.
